These audio clips have been provided as a method for demonstrating the tonal range of the Jackson Ampworks series of amplifiers. During recording, the amplifiers were connected directly to a Jackson Ampworks 4x12 Straight Front Cabinet loaded with 2x Celestion Vintage 30's and 2x Celestion G12H speakers. The cabinet was wired for 16Ω.
An EHX EH-R1 Ribbon Microphone was used for a close-up microphone in order to capture the punch and clarity of the amplifier. This microphone was placed directly in front of the cabinet approximately 2 inches from the front of the grille cloth and positioned halfway between the dust cap and the edge of the speaker. The EH-R1 microphone was chosen for this position because of its unique sonic character and ability to reproduce the subtle nuances of the amplified electric guitar. Given its broad frequency response, and natural open sound, the EH-R1 microphone worked perfectly to reproduce the presence and attack found when close micing a guitar amplifier.
In addition to the EH-R1, a Manley Reference Cardioid Tube Microphone was used to capture the room sound of the amplifier. Placed approximately 6 feet in front of the cabinet, the Manley was used to capture the sound of the amplifier as is was heard reverberating through the studio room. The large stereo image of these clips is in large part due to the use of this microphone. Similar to the sound of a vintage U47 microphone, the rich sonic character and detail present in the Manley make it a perfect choice for reproducing the subtle ambient textures of an amplified electric guitar.
Special Note: Many thanks and warmest regards to Barry Patterson for allowing me the use of his time, talent and humor during the recording and mixing of these clips. Barry, you're a great friend and a fantastic talent. http://www.barryandmichelle.com
